Application Overview
The UCLA Internal Medicine Residency Program participates in the National Residency Matching Program [NRMP] and the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) application system. Interview selection is based on comprehensive review of academic performance, clinical skills, letters of recommendation, scholarship activity, community engagement, and personal characteristics.
A completed application includes the ERAS common application form, personal statement, medical school transcript, a dean's letter, and letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation should include a letter from the department of medicine chair (or designee) and at least two additional letters. All application materials must be submitted through ERAS. The application deadline is November 1.
Graduates of International Medical Schools must possess valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificates. For more information regarding visas, please see the UCLA Graduate Medical Education (GME) Visa Policy. Effective 2019, the state of California no longer requires a Post Graduate Training Authorization Letter (PTAL) from international medical graduates.

Post-Interview Communication Policy
In an effort to maintain the integrity of the match process, UCLA strictly adheres to the principles and rules outlined by the NRMP, APDIM, and AAIM regarding post-interview communication. Thus, we are unable to reply to direct inquiries about application status or statements of intent. Applications will undergo comprehensive review with a goal to recruit a class that embraces and advances the core values of the Department of Medicine. After the interview process, we will not send direct or indirect communications signaling where applicants stand on our rank list. Additionally, the program does not track statements of interest, nor do we factor such statements into the ranking process.
All interviews will be held virtually. In partnership with several of our peer programs, the UCLA Internal Medicine Residency Program has decided not to participate in the NRMP rank list lock pilot and will not be offering in-person second looks for the 2025–2026 application season. We hope this decision helps to ease financial and logistical burdens for applicants during the recruitment process and look forward to meeting you on your virtual interview day!
