April 16- Diana Winston

April 30- Special Event: Film Showing of Three Short Mindfulness Films about Kids, Teens, and Mindfulness and Talk-Back with the Director, Julie Bayer Salzman

“Just Breathe”, “Release”, and “Into Light” are the first of three films in the Mindful Shorts series by filmmaker Julie Bayer Salzman. “Just Breathe” is an introduction to mindfulness with kindergarteners as teachers; “Release” offers middle-school kids a lesson in mindful breathing to help alleviate their stress and anxiety; and “Into Light” features four teens who use mindfulness tools to navigate depression. All three films, though designed with particular age groups in mind, are universal in their function.

We'll shorten our meditation to 15 minutes and then watch the films, followed by a discussion with the director on mindfulness for kids and teens, youth mental health, and the role of filmmaking in sharing mindfulness.

Julie Bayer Salzman

Julie Bayer Salzman

Julie has been working in film, television, and commercial production for over 25 years in a variety of capacities. She and her husband Josh made their directorial debut in 2006 with “Time & Tide”, an award-winning documentary about the impact of globalization and global warming on the tiny South Pacific nation of Tuvalu. The film garnered numerous international film festival awards and went on to broadcast on PBS for seven years. It was one of the first films to recognize climate change as a major global threat, and continues to be shown in universities around the world.

Julie's sensitivity to subject and matter was fully realized and recognized in the widely celebrated viral short “Just Breathe”, a film about mindfulness for emotional regulation, as articulated by a group of elementary school kids. The unscripted piece was featured on numerous blogs (Huffington Post, Upworthy, Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls, among others), and broadcast on Oprah's Super Soul Sunday program in April 2015. It has so far been translated into Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, and Hungarian.
