Integrative Medicine Research

Advancing Research for a Whole-Person Approach

At the UCLA Health Integrative Medicine Collaborative (IMC), we develop research opportunities, collaborate with investigators, and mentor and train junior researchers. We also guide health care providers as they explore the science behind integrative medicine.

Our team is committed to helping integrative medicine investigators formulate their research ideas, conduct clinical research and develop grant proposals. We also train medical students, psychologists, nurse practitioners and other health care professionals in integrative medicine research.

High-quality research is essential for raising awareness of the vital role integrative medicine plays in wellness. That’s why we work with other researchers to promote whole-person care as an evidence-based, effective approach to care.

Uniting with Other Leaders

The UCLA Health IMC is part of the BraveNet Practice-Based Research Network and the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine & Health. Our membership in these organizations reflects our dedication to advancing the practice of integrative medicine and bringing this valuable model of care to our patients.

The BraveNet research collaborative is a network of 32 integrative medicine clinics in the United States and Canada. The Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine & Health includes more than 85 whole-health centers and clinics worldwide. We combine our collective expertise in clinical care, research and education to work together toward a shared goal. Joining these communities enables us to expand our impact and promote this care model to more people.

Find Research Opportunities

We’ve designed this page to provide an overview of research funding opportunities for junior investigators. Research is integral to our mission to promote integrative medicine practices and make this care model widely available. Our IMC team is available to answer your questions, guide your research efforts and support you during your investigations.

Our goal is to improve the quality of research so we can apply our findings to deliver exceptional clinical care.

Present at the IMC Annual Conference

As worldwide leaders in research for integrative health treatments and therapies, we are passionate about expanding our knowledge and understanding of this whole-person approach. The annual meeting of the UCLA Health IMC brings together some of the brightest minds in academic research.

If you’re interested in presenting your research at our annual conference, we encourage you to submit your abstract for review. We are especially interested in scientifically controlled research that examines a new, whole-health approach to preventing, diagnosing or treating disease. We are always looking for approaches that haven’t yet become part of mainstream medicine.

Learn more and complete the submission form to submit an abstract for your scientific research poster or educational exhibit.

Hands-On Research for Medical Students

The elective clinical research rotation for medical students at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA offers the opportunity to conduct research in a clinical setting. You receive up to six weeks of non-clinical credits that count as part of your medical degree requirements. This rotation requires you to have a research mentor. For more information, explore research opportunities for medical students.

Move Forward with a Research Grant

We want to help integrative medicine investigators further their research and discover what’s next in whole-person care. We’ve gathered current grant and funding information to make it as convenient as possible for you to get the financial support you need to move forward with your research.

We invite you to browse grant announcements and research opportunities that are currently available with the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health:

Integrative Medicine Research

Our physician-researchers explore a wide range of topics related to integrative medicine. Read their findings and learn more about their discoveries:

Our multispecialty research programs are led by some of the world’s top educators and physicians. We work together to advance research and promote whole-person care.

UCLA Center for Cannabis and Cannabinoids

The UCLA Center for Cannabis and Cannabinoids is one of the first academic programs dedicated to the multidisciplinary study of cannabis. More than half a century of research restrictions and limited funding have contributed to a lack of scientific knowledge about cannabis, particularly regarding its therapeutic use.

As an increasing number of patients turn to cannabis, UCLA is committed to discovering how to maximize its therapeutic potential while minimizing potential health risks. Our mission is to advance scientific understanding of the impact of cannabis on the body, brain, mind and society. To achieve this mission, we engage in cannabis research, as well as education and discourse across various disciplines. Our work impacts health care providers, policymakers and the general public.

UCLA Norman Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology

The Norman Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology explores the connections between the mind and body. Our mission is to understand the role of psychological well-being in health and recovery from illness. We also aim to translate this knowledge into effective mind-body practices (such as mindful awareness, meditation, tai chi) that prevent disease and promote healing.

Through our community and global educational platforms, we foster mindful awareness across a person’s lifespan to promote well-being and a more compassionate society.

The UCLA Late-Life Mood, Stress, and Wellness Research Program

The UCLA Late-Life Mood, Stress, and Wellness Research Program provides state-of-the-art stress, mood, cognitive, genetic and brain scanning assessments. We also offer opportunities to volunteer for clinical studies, including antidepressant and mind-body interventions, such as tai chi, yoga and meditation.
