The Magnet® Journey at UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center

Our Journey to Third Magnet® Designation
with Distinction

We’re proud to share that UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center (SMUCLA) has achieved its third consecutive Magnet® designation — and this year, with Distinction — from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

This achievement marks a significant milestone: SMUCLA is the first hospital in the UC system to earn Magnet recognition with Distinction, placing it among fewer than 50 hospitals worldwide recognized for exceptional nursing excellence, innovation, and patient-centered care. This recognition reflects the strength of our nursing community and the collective effort that drives excellence across every unit and role.

During the Magnet appraisal, more than 500 nurses shared how they live our Professional Practice Model each day — and their commitment shone through. Appraisers highlighted exemplary outcomes, including:

  • 7.9% nurse-turnover rate (well below the national average of 16.4%)
  • 94.7% of nurses holding a bachelor’s degree or higher
  • 60% of nurses with board certification

These outcomes reflect a culture that values and empowers nurses to grow and deliver the best in patient-centered care.

Embodying Excellence through Professional Governance

The Magnet® model is reflected throughout UCLA Health in our Professional Governance model:
