Online Fall Prevention Community Classes

Cost: $55.00. This is a series of five sessions offered as a complete package. The fee covers all five classes, not just a single session. Each class builds upon the previous one to provide a comprehensive learning experience.

Description: This course discusses common risk factors, physical and environmental, that can contribute to an increased risk of falls. 

Through lecture, demonstration and discussion, participants and caregivers will learn about strategies to decrease fall risk, learn considerations for home and lifestyle, effects of medications, as well as learn some exercises to improve their mobility, strength, balance, and overall well-being. 

Through this course, participants and caregivers will gain a better understanding how to safely navigate this dynamic time in their lives.

Objectives: 

By the end of this five-week course, participants will be able to:

  • Learn common risk factors that contribute to falls
  • Learn lifestyle and home modifications that can decrease risk of falls
  • Learn strategies and techniques to promote flexibility, strength and improve balance

Instructor Bios

 

Leena

Leena Uranwala, PT, MPT

Leena Uranwala has been a physical therapist with UCLA since 2014, after earning her Master's degree in Physical Therapy from California State University Northridge in 2011. For over a decade, she has had the privilege to work with patients through the lifespan from their early teens to their 100s at the Motion Picture and Television Fund Campus, across settings including: Outpatient, Aquatic, Long Term Care, Behavioral Health and Alzheimer's units. She developed a passion for working with individuals at risk for falls, as well as those with osteoporosis and other postural dysfunctions. She has earned specialty certifications in the Pilates Method as well as SAIL (Stay Active and Independent for Life) and has enjoyed teaching UCLA's senior fitness/balance SAIL class, for several years. She is a mom to a vibrant young man who inspires her to continue learning, as do her patients. She is excited to share her experience and empower those who are seeking to gain the tools to build confidence, stay active, and age well.

Kamini

Kamini Parikh, PT, DPT

Kamini Parikh is a Los Angeles native who ventured out to Arizona to obtain her Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2014 from A.T. Still University. She is a physical therapist who treats patients with orthopedic and neurologic diagnosis which lead her to obtaining her Clinical Stroke Rehabilitation Specialist certification in 2019 and began working in the Multiple Sclerosis Achievement Center in 2018. She is actively involved with assessing and making recommendations for patients in need with mobility devices, such as scooters and wheelchairs, for community and in home use. She is a mom of two beautiful young daughters and remains passionate about helping others decrease their risk of falls and improve quality of life throughout the aging years.
