Abdominal Imaging

Learn more: Abdomen CT, MRI and ultrasound

Gastrointestinal Radiology uses imaging modalities such as spiral CT, MRI, plain films and contrast studies of the gastrointestinal and biliary tracts for both diagnosis and intervention in the abdomen.

Gastrointestinal radiologists use interventional procedures such as biopsies, drainage of fluid collections, and hepatic tumor ablations with alcohol or radiofrequency. The UCLA Health Gastrointestinal Radiology team includes: Dr. Barbara Kadell, Vice Chair of Clinical Care - Westwood, Dr. David Lu, Section Chief and Director of Abdominal Interventions, and Dr. Steven Raman. The faculty participates in the teaching of radiology residents and fellows as well as medical students and trainees in the departments of Medicine, Surgery, Gastroenterology, Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine.

Abdominal Imaging

Gastrointestinal Radiology provides the full array of abdominal imaging procedures on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. Digestive tract investigations include: esophagrams, upper gastrointestinal studies, small bowel series, enteroclysis and barium enemas, as well as CT (including helical CT) and MR scanning for the diagnosis of abdominal diseases. Gastrointestinal radiologists also perform hysterosalpingographies, and radiographic investigation of the biliary tree. Interventional procedures in this section include biopsies and fluid drainages using CT, MR, or ultrasound guidance.

The genitourinary radiologists perform a wide variety of interventional procedures related to the urinary tract system, including percutaneous stone extraction.
