UCLA researchers introduce new surgical risk assessment tool – Dr. Nikhil Chervu, resident physician at UCLA Health, and his team at have developed the Comorbid Operative Risk Evaluation (CORE) score, a novel metric that better accounts for patients' chronic illnesses to predict mortality risk after surgery. Although initially misdiagnosed as anxiety, Dr. Shemin accurately identified the underlying cause: a life-threatening congenital heart condition known as an anomalous coronary artery.
