3rd Annual Skills Assessment Workshop
3rd Annual Radiation Oncology Case-Based Education And Skills Assessment Workshop
UCLA Resident and Physician Education Symposium
March 5–6, 2016
University of California Los Angeles
Sponsored by UCLA Department of Radiation OncologyCourse Director: Dr. Allen Chen, Vice-Chair and Residency Program Director at UCLA
Registration is now CLOSED. All workshops have met capacity.
About the Course: The objectives of the this workshop are for the attendee to 1) gain an understanding of the variability in treatment patterns that exist among practicing radiation oncologists, 2) develop a better familiarity with what constitutes the ‘standard of care’ in a rapidly evolving and heavily technologically-based specialty, and 3) engage further in self-directed learning through the identification of gaps in existing knowledge base. Saturday’s course will consist of intensive one-on-one case-based review sessions with renowned academic faculty and community practice physicians from across the United States. A rigorous evaluation process will be instituted and written/verbal feedback provided to attendees. The Sunday session will include didactic lectures given by expert faculty reviewing general management strategies and high yield topics from across disease sites. At the conclusion of each specific disease site session, an interactive case panel will focus on the practical aspects of a typical but difficult case encountered in the radiation oncology clinic. Lastly, this course will offer a valuable opportunity for residents to share educational resources and experiences from across residency programs in a highly collegial environment. There will be ample opportunity to network with fellow residents and practicing radiation oncologists. A complete agenda will be available soon.
Who is this course designed for? Radiation oncology residents and young physicians in practice, particularly those preparing for board exams, are encouraged to attend. NOTE: The case-based skills assessment will be individually tailored to the level of training for each participant so that PGY2-PGY5s are welcome.
Registration Fee: Registration for the 2016 Education Symposium opening soon.
Testimonials from 2015 Symposium:
“Going into the real thing without having done this course would have been terrifying!”
“I liked that it was a very ‘real’ experience. It helped me hone in on subjects that I should study. I liked the atmosphere and collegiality of the participants. This should be done over and over again as I think participants will greatly benefit!”
“Absolutely invaluable for someone who never had a mock oral experience”
“As close to the real thing as I’m likely to get!”
“The lectures on Sunday were very high-yield…taking notes frantically”
“I enjoyed the mix of teaching styles, the questions/cases asked, the combination of academic and private examiners with mixed experience and perspective…great teaching”
“Very realistic timing and intensity…the review sessions with experts in the field provided wonderful guidance on board preparation”
Testimonials from 2014 Symposium:
“Awesome…The setting was very realistic and it highlighted the importance of test-taking skills. It provided a useful way to have insight into yourself and what you need to work on.”
“Prior to this, I had no idea the line of questioning or format of the oral boards so this was extremely valuable.”
“Very well-organized… Friendly collegial ambience”
“Great to gauge where I need to study; many thanks to the examiners! Meeting other area residents was nice. A uniquely valuable experience.”
“Collegial and fun…I felt welcome and appreciated by the hosts.”
“For residents it is a nice simulation of what the oral boards format will be like and a great way to gauge overall progress, and for the examiners it is a nice way to give back to the residents and to meet/connect with other Radiation Oncologists in Southern California.”
“Please continue doing this. It is so important!”
