Global Health Spotlight

As part of the CREW (Cookies, Relationships, Education, and Wellbeing) Project funded by the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, faculty from UCLA partnered with the University of Venda in South Africa to co-develop a curriculum focused on sexual health, mental health, and relationship wellbeing for college students. Led by Drs. Lisa Nicholas and Michelle Cooley-Strickland, the team collaborated with local professors and psychologists in Limpopo and visited Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg to learn from maternal mental health providers and tour the OB/GYN facilities.

Honors, Awards, Appointments and Grants

Brittany Burton, MD (OB Anesthesiology), was awarded the 2025 SOAP/FAER Mentored Research Training Grant at the SOAP Annual Meeting for her proposal on “Determinants of Health and Machine Learning for Healthcare Utilization in Obstetric Care.” This project is co-mentored by Dr. Keith Norris, Dr. Christina Han and Dr. Maxime Cannesson.

Karenee Demery, MD (OVMC) was nominated by the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA to the AAMC’s Minority Faculty Leadership Development Seminar to be held at the AAMC Learning Center in Washington, DC in June 2025.
