Dear Residency Candidate,

Welcome to UCLA! Located on the southern edge of an undergraduate campus with views of the Pacific Ocean, UCLA Medical Center embodies the California spirit: diverse and inclusive, ambitious, creative, and optimistic. There’s simply no place like it.
Our trainees are devoted to mastering the art and science of clinical medicine. Varied training sites include a university medical center, a community hospital, a VA system, and a county hospital. Diversity of patients, sites, and clinical exposure is a hallmark of our training. Graduates of UCLA Internal Medicine program are poised to thrive in any clinical setting.
We love helping each resident meet their potential as a physician, advocate, and leader. We offer four tracks: categorical medicine, primary care, internal medicine-preventive medicine, and PSTP. Additionally, in the second and third years you can select among pathways for advanced leadership training. Our Health Systems Management, Global Health, Medical Education, Research, and Health Equity and Advocacy Pathways provide hands on experience and mentorship to help you meet your goals. For residents seeking careers in basic or clinical science research, the PSTP and STAR programs provide additional infrastructure for advanced training.
So many factors go into choosing a residency program. Every year, I ask our interns what drew them to ours. Many talk about the clinical diversity, the research opportunities, or career development. Some love the urban-outdoor mix. Above all, year after year, our trainees tell us they were drawn to our culture. Members of our community come from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, but they are bound by the shared ideals of humanism, integrity, humility, curiosity, humor, and tenacity.
You may not be able to visit us this year at our home in Los Angeles, but we hope you will get to know our remarkable residents and see for yourself what makes UCLA special.
Warmly,
Lisa Skinner, MD
