Gastrointestinal Health and Menopause

Digestive changes can be common during menopause due to the decrease in the hormones estrogen and progesterone.  These can include the feeling of gas and bloating, constipation or diarrhea, heartburn, abdominal pain or discomfort as well as changes to the appetite. Some studies have shown there may even be changes to the gut microbiome during menopause. The good news is there are many dietary and lifestyle approaches that can help improve these symptoms.

At the UCLA Health Comprehensive Menopause Program, we offer consultations with our digestive diseases team which include GI physicians and GI dieticians specializing in menopause to create a personalized plan to improve your quality of life. For those patients who also have a diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn’s disease collaboration with the UCLA Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center is also available.
