Integrative Medicine FAQs

Our team has gathered some frequently asked questions about integrative medicine, whole-person care and what to expect during your visit. We invite you to explore the questions and answers below.

What is integrative medicine?

Integrative medicine is a growing model within health care that blends Western medicine with complementary therapies. Integrative medicine addresses the physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual and environmental aspects that influence health. Using this whole-person approach, integrative medicine providers consider all aspects of one’s wellness.

Treatment methods may include:

  • Acupuncture, acupressure and reiki
  • Lifestyle and behavioral changes
  • Meditation, mindfulness and massage
  • Nutrition plans, vitamins and supplements
  • Yoga, tai chi and other types of movement

What’s the difference between integrative medicine and “alternative medicine” or “complementary medicine?”

Integrative medicine is sometimes called holistic care, holistic medicine, alternative medicine or complementary medicine. We prefer to use the terms “integrative medicine” and “whole-person care.” That’s because more and more doctors who practice “traditional” or Western medicine are recognizing the many benefits of integrating complementary treatments for a whole-person approach. Therefore, it’s not accurate to describe integrative medicine as alternative or complementary medicine.

How can I get started on my journey with UCLA Health integrative medicine?

Give us a call at 310-267-8271. A friendly patient navigator will answer your questions and help you book an appointment.

What integrative medicine services do you offer in the hospital?

We offer a wide range of inpatient services, including massage, music therapy, pet therapy, acupuncture, trigger point injections and reiki to relieve pain and anxiety. You’ll also have access to guided meditation and mindfulness, breathwork, yoga and relaxing essential oils.

What should patients expect at an integrative medicine appointment?

When you visit us, our integrative health providers will take the time to get to know you. They will ask about your health history, medications, symptoms and lifestyle. Be prepared to share information about your diet, sleep patterns, stress level, relationships, environmental concerns and anything else that might affect your wellness.

This comprehensive appointment might take longer than visits you’ve had with doctors in the past. But a thorough discussion about your overall wellness is a key element of whole-person care. Your provider will partner with you to develop a truly customized care plan, one that addresses the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of your health.

Your integrative medicine provider will recommend what comes next, which may include a follow-up visit. Our team is always available to help you schedule another appointment or answer your questions.
