UCLA Health Integrative Medicine in Primary Care

UCLA Center for East-West Medicine Primary Care
The UCLA Center for East-West Medicine offers primary and continuity of care services in Santa Monica. The mission of East-West Primary Care is to help patients develop optimal health and well-being. We use an academically based model of primary care grounded in the principles of individualized disease prevention, integrative medicine and the philosophy of traditional Chinese healing.
At the Center for East-West Medicine, we blend Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. Through this combined approach, we enable you to take control of your health and manage chronic diseases. Lifestyle interventions include acupuncture, acupressure and nutrition.

UCLA Center for Human Nutrition (preventive care)
For more than two decades, the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition has been at the forefront of research, patient care and education. Malnutrition from over- or undernourishment is the most prominent nutritional disorder affecting a person’s risk for more than 100 diseases. We approach clinical care and research by developing personalized nutrition plans.
Our experts work with dietitians and psychologists to develop nutrition plans that promote overall health and disease prevention. We offer a customized approach to help you maintain a healthy weight through nutrition and lifestyle modification.
UCLA Brain Wellness Consultation Service
Specialists at the UCLA Brain Wellness Center offer proactive screenings to assess brain function. Using brain imaging and integrative evaluations, our experts identify symptoms of cognitive decline, including:
• Changes in memory, attention and concentration
• Difficulty performing mental tasks or retrieving the right words
• Problems with executive functioning, setting priorities, multitasking or following instructionsIdentifying these symptoms early allows us to plan the most effective treatments. The consultation service coordinates care with other UCLA Health experts, including specialists in East-West Medicine, geriatrics, internal medicine, neurology, psychiatry and radiology. Together, we evaluate changes in brain chemistry, structure and function. We then guide patients to the most effective treatments. The Simms/Mann UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology provides information, education and support through a whole-person approach to cancer care. We enhance the physical, psychological and spiritual well-being of people affected by cancer through services such as:

UCLA Health Center for East-West Medicine Consultative Care
The UCLA Center for East-West Medicine was established as a subspecialty consultative clinic in 1993 and has since become known throughout the UCLA Health system for its patient-centered approach. We use therapeutic practices from both the Western medical model and traditional Chinese medicine.
Patients throughout the spectrum of disease often benefit from a combination approach. We enable people to take part in their healing process through education that focuses on:

UCLA Center for Human Nutrition (specialty care)
The UCLA Center for Human Nutrition has helped thousands of patients achieve their health and weight management goals. We also help people manage certain medical conditions through better nutrition and healthier lifestyle habits. In addition, the center offers the latest nutritional guidance for transplant patients, as well as those with cancer and other chronic diseases.
Providers in our Nutrition Oncology Program work with patients receiving care from medical, surgical and radiation oncology specialists. We also offer a perioperative program for people with head and neck cancer. This program improves quality of life and helps people achieve their nutritional goals without the need for tube feeding.
UCLA Health Walter and Shirley Wang Center for Integrative Digestive Health
At UCLA Health, we’re changing the way patients with gastrointestinal conditions are treated. Our integrative approach treats the whole person as well as the digestive tract. We create personalized care plans to help patients manage their symptoms, cope with illness and thrive.

Mind-Body Healing/Integrative Medicine — Head and Neck Cancer
The Mind-Body Medicine Group offers individualized services tailored to your needs. We specialize in helping people with all stages of head and neck cancer cope with diagnosis, treatment and recovery. Our services help you feel more comfortable and better prepared to tackle some of the challenges that cancer can bring.

UCLA Health Integrative Diabetes and Endocrinology Care
Rashmi Mullur, MD, board certified in endocrinology and integrative medicine, leads a 90-minute group clinic where patients learn about integrative approaches to managing and coping with diabetes. The session focuses on the role of stress in blood sugar management. It also reviews the common dietary approaches, supplements and mind-body techniques that have been proven effective in diabetes care.
Dr. Muller assesses each patient’s diabetes-related distress and creates an individualized action plan. The plan includes yoga and mindfulness sessions that patients can practice at home.
She also offers individualized counseling to UCLA Health endocrinology patients. Topics include:

- Review and management of herb and supplement use for patients with thyroid and adrenal diseases

UCLA Health Pulmonary Santa Monica Sleep Clinic
Pulmonologists and sleep medicine physicians help people with a range of sleep disorders. We specialize in obstructive and central sleep apnea, obesity hypoventilation syndrome and home ventilatory therapy.

UCLA Family STAR Clinic
The UCLA Family STAR (Stress, Trauma and Resilience) Clinic provides evaluation, consultation, prevention and treatment services for children and family members affected by trauma and other challenging events. These events can include medical illness, traumatic loss, community violence, disasters and combat deployment.
Our team includes psychiatrists and psychologists specializing in the care of children and adolescents. We have expertise in child and family traumatic stress care for children of all ages and their family members.
UCLA Health Rape Treatment Center
The Rape Treatment Center provides comprehensive treatment for sexual assault victims and their families. We offer 24-hour emergency medical care, forensic examinations and crisis counseling. We also offer yoga, mental health care and other support services as necessary.
Our medical clinic is dedicated exclusively to sexual assault victim care 24 hours a day. It is located within UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center in a private, safe and therapeutic setting. The medical clinic is staffed by highly trained professionals with specialized expertise in the medical, forensic and psychological aspects of victim care.
UCLA Health Women’s Cardiovascular Center
The UCLA Integrative Medicine in Cardiology Program is part of the UCLA Health Women’s Cardiovascular Center. We offer specialized care for women with heart disease. Women often present with different heart disease symptoms than men, so it’s important to provide targeted, personalized care.
Our specialists take a whole-person approach to cardiovascular disease in women. We may recommend lifestyle changes to prevent heart disease or coordinate a heart disease treatment plan.
UCLA Health Center for Women’s Pelvic Health
The UCLA Health Integrative Medicine in Urogynecology Program is part of the UCLA Health Center for Women’s Pelvic Health. Our team has advanced training in integrative medicine and promotes urogynecology research and clinical care. We offer both surgical and nonsurgical treatments.
UCLA Health Integrative Medicine in Gynecologic Oncology, Survivorship Yoga
This weekly gynecologic oncology survivorship yoga and meditation class helps cancer survivors connect with one another and enhance their overall health and well-being. Classes focus on specific asanas, pranayamas and restorative techniques to decrease treatment-related side effects and improve menopausal symptoms.
UCLA Integrative Medicine in Rheumatology
The UCLA Integrative Medicine in Rheumatology Program empowers patients to take charge of their health for optimal well-being. Through educational seminars, patients can learn about new perspectives on the role of central pain syndrome in rheumatologic disorders, including:
- Connective tissue disorders
- Osteoarthritis
- Primary and secondary fibromyalgia
- Rheumatoid arthritis
We also offer nutrition seminars in collaboration with the UCLA Center for East-West Medicine and UCLA Center for Human Nutrition. These seminars provide updates on the emerging field of integrative rheumatology. Topics include the impact of vitamin D, exercise, meditation and sleep on immune system function, with implications for health and illness.

Meena Makhijani, DO, a board-certified integrative medicine physician specializing in geriatrics, sees patients 65 years and older. She offers primary care and consultations on geriatric syndromes.
Dr. Makhijani uses a dynamic patient-centered approach that incorporates:
- Ayurveda (Indian-originated healing techniques)
- Classical osteopathic manipulative techniques
- Integrative medicine
