Watchful Waiting

Holding off on fibroid treatment when possible

Many women with fibroids have modest symptoms, or even none at all. If that’s your experience, watchful waiting (expectant management) could be the best option for you. It involves periodic evaluation — without treatment — by your doctor to protect your health.

Since the vast majority of fibroids aren’t cancerous and don’t cause problems, many women find that observation and monitoring provide the best approach. (Learn more about what fibroids are.)

Each visit during watchful waiting should include:

  • Discussion about fibroid symptoms
  • Abdominal and pelvic exams to assess uterine size
  • Answers to your questions and concerns
