What is The Sonata® Treatment?
The Sonata® Treatment is an incision-free treatment option for women with symptomatic uterine fibroids. Using an intrauterine ultrasound device to locate and target individual fibroids, radiofrequency energy is delivered directly to the fibroid to reduce their size and ease symptoms. The Sonata System is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in the United States.
What are uterine fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop in the uterus. Many women have uterine fibroids at some point in their lives. Most women with fibroids will experience no symptoms at all but some women may experience uncomfortable symptoms, including heavy bleeding and painful periods. Large or numerous fibroids can cause the following symptoms:
- Heavy or prolonged periods
- Bleeding between periods
- Pelvic pain and pressure
- Frequent urination
- Low back pain
- Pain during intercourse
- Difficulty getting pregnant

How does the Sonata® Treatment Work?
The Sonata® Treatment is a treatment option for a wide range of fibroid types, sizes, and locations using an incision-free approach.
Under anesthesia, a UCLA fibroid specialist will perform this procedure by inserting the device into the uterus (through the vagina). Ultrasound is used to locate the fibroid and then radiofrequency energy is delivered to the fibroid, causing it to shrink over time and relieve symptoms. Because the fibroids are treated from inside the uterus, this procedure requires no incisions to the abdomen and the uterus is preserved. This is an outpatient procedure, typically taking no more than one hour.
What are the benefits of using SONATA for the treatment of women with uterine fibroids?
- Shorter hospital stay
- No incisions or scaring
- Faster recovery
Is the Sonata® Treatment covered by insurance?
As this is a new procedure, insurance coverage can be variable. If, after discussion with a UCLA fibroid specialist, the SONATA procedure is recommended as a good option for you, we will work with your insurance to check for coverage.
