Eligibility & Application Information

Applicants must be enrolled in a surgical residency program within one of six departments: Surgery, Head and Neck Surgery, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopaedic Surgery, or Urology. Recruitment will occur at UCLA as well as at other surgical training programs regionally in the Los Angeles area and nationally.

Residents are required to dedicate a minimum of two years to research training and participation in the BCRTP, with the option to extend to three years based on research progress and needs. Ideally, these years will be contiguous but may be separated during residency if deemed optimal for clinical and research development.

Eligible candidates must be U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals, or permanent residents at the time of appointment, in accordance with NIH T32 requirements.

Application and Selection

Applications are due annually in March, and details will be provided to interested candidates. Selection will follow a holistic review process based on:

(A) Commitment to a career as a surgeon-scientist in basic or translational cancer research;
(B) Resilience or “grit,” particularly among candidates from less-resourced backgrounds;
(C) Clinical performance during surgical residency
(D) Leadership, academic excellence, and research achievement.

Funding decisions will be announced in May or June, with support beginning in July for the upcoming academic year.
