Spotlight: Dr. Katie Fruin (Class of 2023)

Post-residency, Dr. Katie Fruin continued her training through UCLA's Preventive Medicine Fellowship and completed an MS in Health Policy and Management at UCLA's Fielding School of Public Health. Dr Fruin's passion is leveraging economic development as a tool to improve health outcomes in high-poverty communities. During fellowship, she worked with the Greater Los Angeles Veteran Affairs Health System's Whole Health Department to revive the 15-acre farm on the West Los Angeles Campus and this past year the nonprofit Grow Good is offering a paid therapeutic agriculture job training program for Veterans. Since residency, Dr. Fruin has been collaborating with Homeboy Industries, a nonprofit focused on providing healing to formerly gang involved and incarcerated individuals. Dr. Fruin was honored to receive the Bruin Scholar Award to continue supporting her work advancing Homeboy's healing mission as a faculty member. Dr Fruin sees patients in the Department of Clinical Nutrition at UCLA.

Spotlight: Dr. Noah Kojima (Class of 2022)

Dr. Noah Kojima is serving as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer in a two-year fellowship program with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). EIS officers conduct epidemiologic investigations and implement control measures for infectious disease outbreaks and other public health threats. Dr. Kojima's is assigned to the Influenza Division at CDC headquarters where he conducts national respiratory virus surveillance, studies of respiratory virus epidemiology, performs assessments of influenza outbreaks, and supports international efforts to increase influenza vaccinations among groups at increased risk for severe influenza outcomes in countries like South Africa. Spotlight: Dr. Courtney DeCan (Class of 2022)

In Dr. Courtney DeCan’s words, “After my primary care residency, I completed my preventive medicine training which included an MPH in Health Policy and Management here at UCLA. Throughout this period, I actively engaged in numerous projects across LA County, examining the impact of our structural and social environments on food accessibility and consumption. My focus was on developing effective programs and policies to improve these environments. I also started working in the Medical Weight Management Clinic at UCLA during this time, gaining valuable insight into the multifaceted aspects involved in treating the disease of obesity. This combination of training fueled my passion for enhancing access to obesity treatment and improving provider education on nutrition and obesity management, particularly among PCP's. I will continue to work in this field as faculty in the Department of Clinical Nutrition at UCLA while holding a joint appointment at Olive View Medical Center where I am involved in establishing a Lifestyle Medicine and Weight Management clinic alongside a fellow PC alumnus.”
