During this rotation, we rotate through subspecialty clinics at the West Los Angeles VA Hospital including urology, neurology, GI, ophthalmology, rheumatology, and ENT. This is a non-call rotation, and weekends are free.
Away Elective (1 month)
Each resident has the opportunity to have an elective that is geographically located away from the residency providing a unique educational experience. Many of our residents have gone to locations including Washington D.C., Africa, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Haiti. Some funding is available to each resident for this elective.
Behavioral Science: UCLA Family Health Center (2 weeks)
We spend time with our staff psychologist discussing psychiatric disorders and psychosocial issues we encounter with patients. We also have sessions learning about pharmacologic management of mental health disorders as well by one of our core faculty members. This is a non-call rotation, and weekends are free. We also spend time in a Practice Management class with residents from other Southern California residency programs reviewing concepts such as healthcare system models, billing, and practice goals after graduation.
Community Medicine: UCLA-Olive View Medical Center (1 month)
During this rotation residents will spend time in the following clinics:
- Venice Family Clinic Mobile Street Medicine
- Providing adolescent care at the San Fernando High School Based Clinic
- UCLA Ryan White-funded HIV Clinic in Van Nuys
- Department of Health Services – The Star Clinic, which is based in Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles, and acts as a hub of clinical services and specializes in serving patients with complex physical and/or behavioral health issues who suffer high rates of morbidity and were recently released from custody
- UCLA Addiction Medicine Clinic
- UCLA Gender Health Clinic
- UCLA Homeless Healthcare Collaborative
- We also mentor and teach at two high schools based in Van Nuys High, coordinating various activities, including group discussions on socioeconomic determinants of health and introducing the students to the healthcare field. This is a non-call rotation, and weekends are free.
Elective (4.5 months)
We have 4 four-week and 3 two-week elective rotations during the PGY-3 year. This provides each resident with the opportunity to individualize his or her training based on personal interest. Some examples of electives that residents have done in the past few years include outpatient pediatrics, East-West medicine, cosmetic dermatology, Planned Parenthood, neurology, and rheumatology. These are non-call rotations, and weekends are free.
Family Medicine Inpatient Service: UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center (3 months)
This is our core family medicine inpatient rotation at the Santa Monica Hospital. We rotate on this service twice in the PGY-1 year, three times in the PGY-2 year, and three times in the PGY-3 year. This team consists of two PGY-1s, two PGY-2s, and one PGY-3 and is staffed by our family medicine attendings. We also work closely with our UCLA Internal Medicine hospitalist team, receiving further bedside teaching. As the IPS team, we admit pediatric and adult patients, and we deliver our continuity OB patients. We manage patients in the ICU with our intensivists, and function as the “on-call” physician for our continuity clinics. We are the Code Blue and rapid response team for the hospital. This is a 12.5-hour shift work schedule for the PGY-3s and there is one day off in every seven days.
Pediatric Emergency Medicine: Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (2 weeks)
We work alongside the CHLA Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physicians on this rotation managing pediatric patients who present to the emergency room. We manage a wide spectrum of acute pediatric medical conditions, including asthma exacerbations, DKA, bronchiolitis, croup, minor trauma, allergic reactions, and much more. During this rotation you work shift work, with an average of one day off in every seven days.
Surgery: Olive View Medical Center (2 weeks)
We work at Olive View-UCLA in the outpatient surgery clinics on this rotation with the UCLA General Surgery residents. We diagnose and manage patients with biliary disease, breast disease, and skin and soft tissue masses. This is a non-call rotation, and weekends are free. We also cover jeopardy during this month, which means you are the “back-up” resident for any call rotation if our resident on that service has an illness or an emergency.
Vacation (4 weeks)
