Rotation Descriptions

Dermatology: West Los Angeles VA (1 month)
We work at the West Los Angeles VA Hospital outpatient Dermatology clinic during this rotation.  We diagnose and treat many common skin conditions including actinic keratosis, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma.  We also learn and perform multiple skin procedures here, including cryotherapy, shave biopsies, and punch biopsies.  This is a non-call rotation, and weekends are free.  We also cover jeopardy during this month, which means you are the “back-up” resident for any call rotation if our resident on that service has an illness or an emergency.

Emergency Department:  UCLA-Olive View Medical Center (1 month)
During this rotation, we staff the busy Emergency Department at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center with the UCLA ER residents.  We triage, diagnose, and manage a variety of conditions including myocardial infarctions, fractures and lacerations, pneumonia, appendicitis, and gynecology pathology.  We do many procedures in this ED, including bedside ultrasounds, laceration repair, casting, displaced fracture reduction, I&Ds, lumbar punctures, paracenteses, thoracenteses, and intubations.  This is a 12-hr shift work schedule, with an average of one day off in every seven days.

Elective (1.5 months)
We have 3 two-week elective rotations during the PGY-2 year.  This provides each resident with the opportunity to individualize their training based on personal interest.  Some examples of electives that residents have done in the past few years include outpatient pediatrics, East-West medicine, cosmetic dermatology, Planned Parenthood, neurology, and rheumatology.  These are non-call rotations, and weekends are free.

Family Medicine Inpatient Service: UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center (3 months)
Our core family medicine inpatient rotation at UCLA Santa Monica Hospital. Team consists of two interns, two PGY-2s, and led by a senior PGY-3. The service is a combination of 1) continuity pediatric, OB, adult, and geriatric patients seen at our UCLA Family Health center that are admitted and staffed with a Family Medicine attending, and 2) internal medicine patients that have a UCLA primary care doctor and staffed with an Internal Medicine hospitalist attending. Rounds are usually sit down with opportunities for formal teaching and bedside rounds with physical exam review. ICU patients are co-managed with intensivists, who oversee bedside procedures such as chest tubes, arterial lines, and intubations. On night shift the team consists of one junior resident and one senior PGY-3 who both admit patient’s overnight and manage the list of teams list of patients. And finally, we serve as the primary Code Blue and rapid response team in the hospital. This is a 14-hour shift work schedule q4, and there is an average of one day off in every seven

ICU:  UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center (2 weeks)
The resident on this rotation will work with the on-site intensivist as a member of the day shift team that accepts the overnight admissions from the overnight team.  The ICU team follows patients in the ICU requiring critical care management and/or requiring monitoring in the ICU for longer than 24 hours.  We are assigned patients by the attending to follow in the ICU, including writing daily progress notes and active involvement with patient management with supervision from the attending. This also includes working rounds with the team attending and participating in daily multidisciplinary rounds, which are attended by the ICU teams, bedside nurses, pharmacist, case manager, social worker, nutritionist, and physical therapist. Basic quality measures are assessed and confirmed at a bedside (DVT prophylaxis, central line necessity, early mobility).  Brief daily plan of care is reviewed. This is a 10-hour shift-work day rotation, with an average of one day off in every seven days.

Obstetrics: California Hospital (1 month) – consider writing see above (similar to IPS)
During this rotation, we work in teams with OB-GYN attending physicians on the Labor and Delivery floor at California Hospital, servicing the urban underserved population of Downtown Los Angeles.  We assess and triage patients, monitor labor progression, perform vaginal deliveries, assist in C-section deliveries, and run the postpartum service. After two months here completed over the course of PGY1 and PGY2 years, every resident surpasses the number of deliveries required by the Family Medicine Resident Review Committee, and will have the opportunity to perform AROM, IUPC, FSE, and foley balloon placements.  This is a 13-hour shift-work rotation, including both day and night shifts, with an average of one day off in every seven.

Pediatrics: UCLA-Olive View Medical Center (1 month)
We work alongside the UCLA Pediatric residents on this rotation managing patients in the inpatient and outpatient settings at Olive View-UCLA Hospital.  We manage common inpatient pediatric medical conditions, including asthma exacerbations and dehydration. In the outpatient setting, we work in the continuity clinic and urgent care with the pediatric subspecialist clinics such as cardiology, gastroenterology, dermatology, asthma and allergy, neurology, and nephrology. We also spend time in the Olive View ED in the exclusively pediatric area, triaging and treating pediatric patients. During this rotation you have 2-3 on call shifts a week with an average of one day off in every seven days. We take approximately twelve 13.5-hr calls in one month.

Pediatric Ambulatory Elective (2 weeks)
This two-week elective rotation provides each resident with the opportunity to individualize his or her outpatient pediatric training at a location of their choice with approval by the program director.  These are non-call rotations, and weekends are free.

Sports Medicine: UCLA Santa Monica Sports Medicine Clinic (1 month)
This rotation is based in Santa Monica working alongside our Sports Medicine faculty and fellows. We work with these attendings in the outpatient setting at Santa Monica Hospital and Orthopedic Institute for Children (OIC) as well as at sporting events and in the UCLA Training Room with the UCLA athletes.  This is a non-call rotation and weekends are free.

General Surgery:  UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center (2 weeks)
We spend the majority of our time in the outpatient surgery clinic, and perform clinic I&Ds and bedside ultrasound when necessary. If you would like you can ask to spend time in the operating rooms, and may perform lipoma and epidermal cyst removals. This is a non-call rotation and weekends are free.

Outpatient Gynecology: UCLA-Harbor Medical Center (1 month)
We staff the Gynecology Urgent Care center at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center with the Harbor OB/GYN residents.  Here, we see gynecology problems ranging from pelvic pain and dysfunctional uterine bleeding, to PID and menopausal management.  We also work in the colposcopy clinic, the Uro-Gyn clinic, and the REI clinic at Harbor during this rotation. This is a non-call rotation, and weekends are free.
