  • May 20: An Evening on Conscious Aging with Zesho Susan O'Connell and Diana Winston

Aging brings with it a host of challenges, from illness, changing bodies, to sometimes surprising life circumstances. Some changes are particularly difficult - and yet, when we meet them with a combination of wisdom, compassion, mindfulness, and equanimity, we can live a fuller and more vibrant life.  Some older adults are showing a willingness to develop and evolve a culture of what we can call "Conscious Aging" or "Not Turning Away" that is rooted in mindfulness practice.  Susan O'Connell will offer some thoughts on this topic and respond to your questions.

In this event, we'll meditate together, then Diana will interview Zesho about Conscious Aging. This evening will also raise awareness about Enso Verde, a Zen-inspired senior living community coming to Southern California.

Zesho Susan O’Connell is a senior Zen Teacher trained at the San Francisco Zen Center. During her 30 years in residence there she served as Director of Development, Vice President and President of San Francisco Zen Center, among other senior positions. She began Zen practice in 1987 and became a resident of Zen Center in 1995. She received priest ordination from Tenshin Reb Anderson in 1999 and received Dharma Transmission in 2016. She is a founding officer of No Abode Hermitage and on the Board of Greens Restaurant. She is the visionary behind the creation of Enso Verde and Enso Village - where she currently resides.

Now in the planning stages, Enso Verde is a Zen-inspired senior living community offering a mindful, approach to retirement in a natural mountain setting. Inspired by its sister community, Enso Village in Sonoma County, it will foster sustainability, intellectual and spiritual curiosity, and an appreciation for life’s complexity. Welcoming older adults of any or no spiritual tradition into an open, contemplative culture with independent living residences, along with assisted living and memory care for changing needs, Enso Verde offers flexible ways to create the life you envision.
