UCLA researchers to participate in key sessions at American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting

UCLA Health psychiatrists and researchers will present their latest research and speak at several panel sessions at the American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting on April 17-21 in Los Angeles. 

Experts will discuss and be available for interviews on the following topics:

  • Los Angeles wildfires/natural disaster impacts
  • Behavioral effects of cannabis and cannabis use disorder
  • Perinatal and postpartum mental health; maternal mood/anxiety disorders
  • Evolving treatment of ADHD and other psychiatric conditions
  • Mental health of professional athletes; sports gambling
  • Longevity, breathwork
  • Infant mental health and parent-child bonding

UCLA Experts

Helena Hansen, MD, PhD, interim director of the Jane and Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA and interim chair of the UCLA Health Department of Psychiatry, UCLA, can discuss Los Angeles wildfire mental health impacts and response, social medicine, integration of social sciences in medicine and health equity.

Misty Richards, MD, associate clinical professor with a joint appointment in the UCLA Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, is available to discuss perinatal and postpartum mental health, maternal mood and anxiety disorders, infant mental health, parent-child bonding, integration of psychiatry into obstetric care.

Timothy Fong, MD, co-director of the UCLA Gambling Studies Program and clinical professor of psychiatry at Jane and Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA, can discuss gambling addiction, sports gambling, mental health of professional and elite athletes and addiction psychiatry.

Ziva Cooper, PhD, director of the UCLA Center for Cannabis and Cannabinoids in the Jane and Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA, can speak about therapeutic potential and adverse effects of cannabis and cannabinoids on behavioral health. 

Helen Lavretsky, MD, MS, geriatric integrative psychiatrist and professor in-residence in the Department of Psychiatry at UCLA, is available to discuss mind-body interventions for mental health, longevity, breathing exercises, yoga and Tai Chi for prevention of late-life mood and cognitive disorders and psychopharmacological treatment of geriatric depression, mild cognitive impairment.

Elizabeth Bromley, MD, PhDprofessor of psychiatry at UCLA and director of the UCLA-Los Angeles Department of Mental Health Public Mental Health Partnership, can discuss quality of care for individuals with grave disabilities, mental health care for the homeless, psychosis and legislative history and approaches to mental illness response.

James McGough, MD, MS, professor of clinical psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior and David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, can discuss ADHD in children, pediatric psychopharmacology, childhood irritability and severe mood dysregulation and neuromodulation.

Jennifer Kruse, MD, health sciences associate clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA, can discuss inflammation in mood disorders and depression treatment outcomes as well as links between immune function, metabolic function, depression symptoms and depression treatment outcomes. 

Alexander Young, MD, MSHS, health services researcher and professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Semel Institute for Neuroscience & Human Behavior at UCLA, is available to discuss psychiatric treatment, mental health services, clinical informatics, primary care of people with mental illness and measuring and improving the quality of mental health services.
