Your First Visit – What to Expect
The goal of your first visit to the UCLA Sports Cardiology is to provide our team with the opportunity to get to know you – your medical history, your personal and athletic goals, your symptoms (if applicable) – and to develop an individualized plan for your needs.
Step 1: Download and fill out our customized questionnaire (PDF) to provide us with a comprehensive summary of your assessment of your goals.
Step 2: Meet with our team nurse, who will take your vital signs and perform a 12-lead electrocardiogram (if indicated by your answers to our questionnaire).
Step 3: Meet with a sports cardiologist from our team. In addition to obtaining a complete medical history and performing a full physical exam, our cardiologist will spend time to fully understand your goals and help determine our role in helping you to achieve those goals.
Step 4: Further studies may be ordered by your sports cardiologist, depending on your specific symptoms or condition. The indication and utility for these tests will be described to you in detail, and if desired, the tests can be scheduled. These tests may include but are not limited to:
- Echocardiogram: An ultrasound of your heart to evaluate the structure and function of your heart muscles and valves
- Exercise stress testing: A test in which we monitor your heart during exercise.
- Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET): A test in which we quantify your heart’s ability to deliver oxygen to your body during exercise
- Laboratory tests: Blood tests to measure the levels of the blood cells and electrolytes in your blood, as well as assess the function of other vital organs (kidney, liver, thyroid)
