Overview
The COVID-19 pandemic swept across the world in early 2020 with millions of cases across the United States and more occurring each day. Although a new virus, research on the immediate and long-term consequences of COVID-19 has occurred at a rapid pace. We are now beginning to understand that the virus not only attacks the lungs but also can impact the heart. The effects of COVID-19 on the heart can linger as part of a “long COVID” syndrome, delaying return to usual activities.
Our aim at the UCLA COVID Cardiology clinic is to provide comprehensive cardiovascular care to patients with a previous COVID-19 infection. Our board-certified cardiologists have extensive experience with COVID-19 patients and use the most up to date evidence to inform care.
Who should make an appointment with the UCLA COVID Cardiology Clinic?
Any patient who has experienced COVID-19 and any of the following:
- Arrhythmia, heart failure or cardiac injury during or after hospitalization for COVID-19
- Persistent symptoms (>14 days) of chest pain, palpitations, unexplained shortness of breath or fatigue
- Referral from a primary care physician or cardiologist
How will I be evaluated for COVID-19 related cardiac dysfunction?
All patients seen in the UCLA COVID-19 will undergo an extensive history and physical examination in addition to appropriate diagnostic tests and imaging.
Components of the visit:
- Thorough review of past medical history and hospital course (please bring your records to your appointment)
- All patients will receive baseline bloodwork and an electrocardiogram
- If clinically indicated, we may evaluate your heart rhythm with an ambulatory cardiac monitor
- We may also evaluate your heart for inflammation with a Cardiac MRI
- We may also perform a stress test to ensure you are ready to return to strenuous physical activity
Your treatment plan will be tied to the results of your evaluation. Each visit will conclude with extensive patient education to help you feel informed about the state of your health. We also offer video visits and can always be reached by phone.
