Evidence-Based Addiction Treatment
The UCLA Health Dual Diagnosis Program is an eight-week intensive outpatient program (IOP) designed for individuals struggling with both addictive disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. The program runs Monday through Friday, providing group and individual psychotherapy, medication management with a UCLA Health psychiatrist, and educational lectures for patients and their families.
Our evidence-based approach emphasizes integrated treatment, addressing addictive disorders and any co-occurring mental health conditions — such as depression and anxiety — simultaneously, helping patients achieve recovery from both their addiction and its underlying causes.
Why Choose the UCLA Health Dual Diagnosis Program
Treating addiction alone is often insufficient. Research demonstrates that addressing co-occurring psychiatric conditions simultaneously improves outcomes and reduces relapse risk. By integrating treatment for both addiction and associated mental health conditions, the UCLA Health Dual Diagnosis Program provides patients with the best chance for long-term recovery and well-being.
Even if a patient has only been diagnosed with an addictive disorder, undiagnosed psychiatric conditions are common. Comprehensive evaluation ensures that no underlying issues are overlooked, improving long-term outcomes.

Conditions We Treat
Addictive disorders
As a leader in Los Angeles addiction treatment, the UCLA Health Dual Diagnosis Program provides care for all addictive disorders — including substance use disorders involving alcohol, cannabis, opioids, cocaine, amphetamines and benzodiazepines — as well as behavioral addictions such as gambling disorder and sex addiction.
Our treatment model is based on the recognition that addiction rarely occurs in isolation. We offer comprehensive treatment that combines evidence-based therapy, individualized care and medical management to address both the addiction and the psychological factors that contribute to and reinforce it. By treating the whole person, our program equips patients with the tools, strategies and support necessary for long-term recovery.
Co-occurring mental health conditions
Many individuals with addictive disorders also experience psychiatric conditions that are mutually reinforcing with their addiction. The UCLA Health Dual Diagnosis Program treats a broad spectrum of co-occurring disorders, including:
- Anxiety disorders: Generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder and related anxiety conditions
- Depressive disorders: Major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder, substance-induced depressive disorder and other depressive conditions
- Bipolar and related disorders: Bipolar I, bipolar II, cyclothymic disorder and related conditions
- Trauma- and stressor-related disorders: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), acute stress disorder and related trauma disorders
- Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders: Obsessive-compulsive disorder, substance-induced OCRD and related conditions
- Psychotic disorders: Schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder and other psychotic-spectrum disorders
What to Expect
The UCLA Health Dual Diagnosis Program integrates psychotherapy, medication management and psychoeducation to address the full spectrum of addictive and psychiatric disorders. Key components include:
Expert assessment
Accurate diagnosis can be challenging when addiction and psychiatric conditions co-occur. Our Expert Assessment Service provides a comprehensive evaluation by a UCLA Health trained psychiatrist to clarify diagnoses and determine the most appropriate level of care. This service is a one-time visit, covered by insurance and independent of program enrollment.
Medication management
Our board-certified psychiatrists optimize medications for both addictive and co-occurring conditions. Expert psychiatric medication management can enhance therapeutic benefits, reduce side effects and identify the most effective pharmacological options for each patient’s unique profile.
Individual psychotherapy
Individual therapy focuses on understanding and managing the thoughts, emotions and behaviors that can perpetuate addiction and psychiatric symptoms. Our therapists employ evidence-based psychotherapeutic modalities in a safe, nonjudgmental environment to help patients identify unhelpful defense mechanisms and develop new coping strategies.
Group therapy
Group therapy sessions are run by program psychotherapists using evidence-based treatment designed specifically for patients with addictive disorders. Patients gain insight, encouragement and practical strategies for managing addiction and co-occurring conditions.
Psychoeducation
Weekly educational lectures are provided by the program's founder, Jason Schiffman, MD, MA, MBA. These lectures discuss the neurobiology of addiction, the role of trauma in the development of addictive disorders, strategies for creating healthy boundaries in early recovery, and the various psychotherapeutic, behavioral and community-based resources that are available to people recovering from addiction. The lectures are open to patients, their families and alumni of the program.
