Barlow Respiratory Hospital

At UCLA Health, we work closely with Barlow Hospital. We’re confident that patients transferred there will continue to receive safe, world-class care during the next stage of recovery.

About Barlow Hospital

Barlow Hospital is a UCLA Health affiliate staffed by UCLA Health doctors. It specializes in caring for patients who need long-term hospital care.

UCLA Health doctors are on the Barlow main campus, delivering specialized care directly to patients alongside respiratory specialists, clinicians and nurses who are available 24/7. This partnership expands access to care and helps ensure patients receive the highest-quality treatment in the most appropriate clinical setting.

Barlow Hospital has served the Greater Los Angeles community since 1902 and is nationally celebrated for excellence in respiratory care. The hospital developed the TIPS© Protocol for weaning patients from prolonged mechanical ventilation. It has also been recognized by the American Association for Respiratory Care for its distinguished services.
Barlow provides specialized care for the following:

  • Blood disorders
  • Heart conditions
  • Complex respiratory care needs
  • Complex wounds
  • Infectious diseases
  • Kidney disease
  • Neurological conditions
  • Pre-transplant care
  • Post-transplant recovery

Transferring to Barlow Hospital

A transfer to Barlow Hospital means you are moving from a traditional ICU or acute care unit to a hospital that specializes in longer-term recovery, known as a Long-Term Acute Care Hospital (LTACH). Barlow cares for patients who need additional time to come off a ventilator (breathing machine), a process referred to as weaning. They also care for patients who need complex wound care or other advanced medical treatments. UCLA Health doctors care for patients at both UCLA Health and Barlow, helping maintain strong communication and ensuring smooth, continuous care throughout the recovery process.

Patients transferred to Barlow:

  • Still need specialized hospital-level treatment
  • Receive a personalized care plan
  • Start ventilator weaning
  • May begin rehabilitation
  • Prepare for their next stage of recovery as they improve

After receiving care at an LTACH, including Barlow Hospital, patients may either be transferred to a skilled nursing facility or acute rehabilitation hospital or return home with support.
