Shaping the future of pediatric surgery through research and innovation

UCLA Health’s Division of Pediatric Surgery is pioneering breakthroughs that improve the lives of children around the world. From advancing minimally invasive techniques to global collaborations and education, our research drives excellence in every aspect of pediatric surgical care.

Minimally invasive and robotic techniques

UCLA pediatric surgeons are at the forefront of minimally invasive procedures, including laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgeries. These methods reduce pain, recovery time, and surgical risk. Our team is also exploring the potential of robotic-assisted surgery to increase precision, especially in complex and delicate pediatric cases.

Rethinking appendicitis management

Our researchers are studying new ways to manage pediatric appendicitis, including non-operative approaches using antibiotics. We also explore how shared decision-making empowers families, helping parents weigh options alongside their child's care team. Read our study on parent perspectives.

Global health partnerships

We’re extending UCLA’s impact beyond Los Angeles through collaborations in underserved regions. In Mozambique, we support Dr. Atanasio Taela, the country’s only pediatric surgeon. Our efforts include surgical training and systems support. Programs like Project Nicaragua combine research and outreach to reduce disparities in surgical access. Explore our global health work.

Cross-disciplinary collaboration

Pediatric surgery research at UCLA thrives through partnerships with departments across campus, including Pediatrics and the Broad Stem Cell Research Center. Together, we advance studies in pediatric oncology, tissue engineering, and surgical innovation.

Training tomorrow’s leaders

UCLA’s General Surgery Residency includes dedicated rotations in pediatric surgery at Mattel Children’s Hospital. Trainees gain hands-on experience in advanced procedures, supported by opportunities to participate in impactful research.
