"I chose UCLA because of the people, training environment, and location. I had opportunities to meet with possible clinical and research mentors prior to matching, which solidified my decision. Everyone here has been incredibly supportive in my pursuit of the appropriate mix between clinical and research exposure. I am currently working in Yvonne Chen's Lab, engineering novel CAR-T cell therapies to treat solid tumors. I came into fellowship without any lab experience, and here at UCLA, I have had the opportunity to truly work on developing a therapeutic that can go from bench to bedside. The collaborative atmosphere of UCLA provides endless opportunities for whatever you want to pursue, and the whole campus is open to you as a fellow. Being able to live in Westwood in perfect weather and having everything outside of the university available to you is a huge bonus. "

"On my interview trail, I met so many wonderful people but when I met Dr. Moore and all of the attendings and fellows, I knew that I would feel supported in my fellowship journey. This has truly been the case and it is such a collegial environment where my education and overall well-being is supported. Rotating at different hospitals also provides greater exposure to different populations and methods of practice, as well as opportunities for patient advocacy. I was also drawn to UCLA for the innovative research opportunities, knowing that I wanted to do bench research and all of the possible research connections at UCLA including in the non-pediatric world. For my research, I am in the Soragni Lab working with osteosarcoma patient derived organoids, testing high throughput drug sensitivities and studying the ability to predict chemotherapy response in new localized or metastatic disease in both the adult and pediatric populations. Also, coming from the northeast winters, the mostly sunny weather year-round provides for lots of exploration of the beauty of LA and its surrounding areas."

"I chose UCLA because of the incredible research opportunities. You're not just limited to pediatric hematology/oncology—you can collaborate across campus and even with other institutions on cutting-edge bench and clinical research. Right now, I’m working on developing a Phase I/II clinical trial for lentiviral gene therapy in alpha thalassemia and creating an Hb H Constant Spring cell line for disease modeling and therapeutic testing. There’s a lot of support here to help you pursue what you're passionate about—and of course, you get to live in LA!"
