UCLA’s pediatric perioperative surgical home (PPSH) consists of a collective group of healthcare professionals working together to provide exceptional care to our patients undergoing surgery at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital. The initiation of our PPSH was developed from a patient-centric, team-based model of care created by leaders within the American Society of Anesthesiologists. The goal is to coordinate care for the surgical patient throughout the entire surgical experience, from the decision to undergo surgery to recovery time at home. This model of care was implemented to improve value of health, delivery of care and to reduce the cost of care for all our pediatric surgical patients.

Our surgical and anesthesiology teams are developing and applying evidence-based, outcome-oriented guidelines and new protocols for the perioperative care of our pediatric patients. The focus has primarily been on optimizing preoperative preparation and evaluation for patient safety and ensuring faster recovery and higher quality of patient care. The PPSH is currently working toward establishing a standardization of care for every pediatric patient, from the healthy to the medically complex, seen at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital.
