Philanthropy saving lives – that's what the UCLA Health Mobile Stroke Unit is all about. Roughly every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. will have a stroke. Almost every four minutes, someone will die as the result. Against that backdrop, UCLA Health has officially launched the first Mobile Stroke Unit on the West Coast, enabling rapid delivery of brain-saving medications to stroke patients who might otherwise face debilitating delays in treatment. The design, build and clinical rollout of the Mobile Stroke Unit was made possible by a philanthropic donation to UCLA by the Arline & Henry Gluck Foundation. “Helping make this mobile stroke unit possible for the people of Los Angeles, and to support the research into this type of care, is such a privilege,” said business executive and philanthropist Henry Gluck, who is also chair of the UCLA Health System Board.“Through this, we can save lives today, while improving care in the future.”

Role Of Philanthropy

Private philanthropy is essential to the UCLA Arline and Henry Gluck Stroke Rescue Program and its lifesaving mission. During the demonstration and bridging stages, the program was sustained by the visionary philanthropy of Arline and Henry Gluck and other generous individuals. The award-winning Stroke Rescue Program has achieved so much since its inception. Entering Phase 3, the program seeks support to: 

1. Continue advocacy to reform legislation on a national scale for the care received within an MSU to be reimbursed by insurance.
2. Purchase and equip additional MSUs.
3. Expand clinical services to provide care to all of L.A. County, including communities where reimbursements from sources such as Medicare and Medi-Cal will not cover program costs. Broadening service areas will help save more lives and enhance quality of life for stroke survivors.
