UCLA SCOPE
Empowering Los Angeles
Students for Community Outreach, Promotion, and Education (SCOPE) is a community service organization that empowers underserved populations in Los Angeles through a variety of unique volunteer programs. SCOPE consists of FIVE programs that each target specific communities. We work together to empower the greater Los Angeles community through meaningful service that minimizes disparities in education and healthcare.
SCOPE Programs
UCLA All Brains
All Brains collaborates with campus organizations like the Center for Accessible Education (CAE), the Bruin Resource Center (BRC), and Residential Life (ResLife), to host social events, provide resident assistant (RA) trainings, and plan faculty training sessions. Volunteers are being dual-trained in neurodiversity and peer coaching through the BRC's GRIT program to launch a pilot mentoring program, making All Brains a pioneering support network for neurodiverse students at UCLA.
Fitness and Nutrition
SCOPE Fitness and Nutrition (FITNUT) is a Los Angeles-based health education program teaching fitness and nutrition to 3rd through 5th graders, aiming to improve health outcomes by promoting healthy eating and physical activity. The program raises awareness of social determinants of health and encourages students to be active community members, while teachers gain leadership skills, teaching experience, and insights into community health challenges by building positive relationships.
Hablamos Juntos
Hablamos Juntos is a collaborative effort between UCLA Pediatrics physicians and SCOPE volunteers, with the purpose of providing useful and free classes for Spanish-speaking parents to support their child’s speech development. In several group sessions taught in Spanish, parents can learn to identify their child’s speech level and develop a framework to facilitate their speech development.
Patient Health Advocates
Patient Health Advocates (PHA) is a collaborative program between student advocates and UCLA physicians dedicated to connecting underserved patients with community resources to enhance their health and well-being. Volunteers conduct social casework at UCLA clinics, assisting patients of all backgrounds. The program offers a tailored training curriculum featuring public health topics and clinician panels, preparing members to effectively serve UCLA Health patients and physicians.
Youth Empowerment Program
SCOPE’s Youth Empowerment Program (YEP) aims to improve the greater Los Angeles community by providing meaningful mentorship to diverse elementary school students, including those from underserved or disadvantaged backgrounds. YEP volunteers build personal relationships with students, assisting with homework and offering support during difficult days.
