Clinical Services

The General Medicine Wards teams are primarily staffed by hospitalists from our division, providing comprehensive inpatient care for Veterans with a wide range of medical conditions. Care is delivered in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team that includes medical students, residents, case managers, and social workers. This service also serves as a core teaching rotation, with hospitalists supervising and mentoring trainees at multiple levels.

The Medicine Consultation team provides 24/7 inpatient consultative support. Our hospitalists assist with evaluation and management of common conditions on non-Medicine services, perform inpatient perioperative and periprocedural evaluations, and evaluate transfer requests to Internal Medicine ward teams from non-Medicine teams. The service also functions as a teaching rotation, with hospitalists supervising residents and learners from Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology, Dentistry and Podiatry.

Referred to as the GOPRO service - this is a surgical co-management team that partners with Gynecology, Orthopedic Surgery, Podiatry, Radiology, Ophthalmology, and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery to care for patients with complex medical comorbidities. Hospitalists provide medical management and coordination alongside surgical teams to ensure safe, comprehensive inpatient care. This service also functions as a teaching rotation, with hospitalists supervising learners, most often Anesthesiology interns.

The Hospitalist Medical Officer of the Day (MOD) provides daytime oversight for the General Medicine services. Hospitalists facilitate incoming transfer requests from outside hospitals, coordinate transfers from the ICU to the wards, supervise rapid responses and codes, and monitor team workloads to ensure balanced admissions. This role is central to patient safety, smooth operations, and effective care transitions across the medical center.

The Night Medical Officer of the Day (Night MOD) provides overnight supervision for the General Medicine services. Hospitalists oversee transfer requests, respond to rapid responses and codes, and supervise trainees to ensure safe and coordinated care for Veterans during off-hours. This role maintains continuity and clinical oversight throughout the night.

The Community Living Center (CLC) Dementia Care service supports Veterans with advanced cognitive impairment who benefit from a safe, closely monitored post-acute setting. The hospitalist partners with the primary nurse practitioner to provide collaborative care and coordinate transfers from inpatient acute care teams and with disposition planning.
