Co-Directors' Welcome

Welcome! We are so excited that you are considering UCLA’s internal medicine PSTP for your residency training and beyond. As alumni of this program, we wholeheartedly believe that there is no better place for physician-scientists to train than UCLA.

Physician-scientist training programs (PSTPs) are designed to support young physician-scientists through the residency years, nurturing an ongoing love for science and developing them to become the leading physician-scientists of tomorrow. The environment at UCLA is tailor-made for this. UCLA Health brings in over $1 billion of research funding annually; its clinical enterprise supports over 1,300 trainees across 99 programs; and it consistently ranks in the top 5 hospitals in the United States. We believe that if you can dream it, you can do it within the environment at UCLA.

One of the key features that make UCLA’s PSTP truly unique is its integration with our renowned Specialty Training and Advanced Research (STAR) program. UCLA's STAR program trains physician-scientists at the fellowship level by providing unmatched opportunities for rigorous research training. For over thirty years, STAR has produced leading physician-scientists through a deeply supportive environment that encourages all types of research: basic, translational, clinical, implementation, and health services research. The unique appeal of our PSTP program, therefore, is a seamless integration into the incredible community of physician-scientists in UCLA’s Department of Medicine. We call our program “STAR-PSTP” because as a physician-scientist in our residency program, you are part of the STAR family.

The UCLA STAR-PSTP features the following

  • Guaranteed option to fast-track into UCLA STAR and subspecialty fellowship of choice, assuming appropriate clinical milestones are met
  • Quarterly STAR-PSTP networking events
  • Mentorship with STAR-PSTP directors, including guidance in identifying potential research mentors
  • Near-peer mentorship from fellows in the STAR program
  • Invitation to participate in career development seminars and networking events provided by the STAR program

Thank you for considering UCLA STAR-PSTP. Please explore the website and reach out if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
