Advanced Clinical Clerkship (ME225.01 Endocrinology and Metabolism)

Course Objectives (in order of importance)

  1. Ability to understand the disease process in patients by integration of clinical findings (history and physical) with laboratory tests.
  2. Gain knowledge of the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of diseases of the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pancreas (endocrine), testes, and ovary.
  3. Understand the function of the endocrine organs, metabolism of their hormones, and their effects on the body.
  4. Ability to interpret the results of measurements of hormone stimulation and suppression testing.
  5. Gain familiarity with the use of insulin, thyroid hormone, corticosteroids, androgens, estrogens and other drugs.
  6. Acquire experience interpreting endocrine specific imaging studies.

Course Description

Students function as sub-interns in the inpatient consultation service as well as in the diabetes/endocrine clinics. The inpatient team consists of an endocrinology attending and an endocrinology fellow and may or may not include residents. Students also have an intensive experience with various ambulatory endocrinology clinics. Attendance to endocrine conferences and rounds is mandatory.
