UCLA’s Dr. Mary Marfisee Featured by NPR for Work with Unhoused Women on Skid Row
We are proud to share that UCLA physician and community health leader Dr. Mary Marfisee was recently highlighted by NPR for her transformative work caring for unhoused women in Los Angeles’ Skid Row. In the feature, NPR follows Dr. Marfisee on street-medicine rounds and inside the Union Rescue Mission, where she has spent nearly two decades delivering compassionate, patient-centered care to some of the city’s most vulnerable residents. The feature, titled “The Saint of Skid Row,” showcases Dr. Marfisee’s street-medicine work and her deep commitment to women’s health, bringing care directly to patients living in shelters and on the streets. The story emphasizes her patient-centered approach — meeting individuals where they are and addressing urgent health needs through outreach, education, and continuity of care. Congratulations! Gerardo Moreno MD, MS elected Chair of the American Board of Family Medicine
The Department of Family Medicine congratulates Dr. Moreno! ABFM announced the election of four new officers and four new board members to the ABFM Board of Directors. New officers elected in April (2023 - 2024) are: Gerardo Moreno, MD, MSHS, of Los Angeles, CA as Chair; Andrea Anderson, MD, of Washington, DC as Chair-Elect; Robert L. Wergin, MD, of Lincoln, NE as Treasurer; and Mott P. Blair, MD, of Wallace, NC as Member-at-Large of the Executive Committee.

Dr. Moreno and Co-PI Dr. Jennifer Lucero of the Departments of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine and Obstetrics & Gynecology have been awarded a $2.5M Center of Excellence grant from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration. The 5-year grant is designed to provide educational and training opportunities that focus on increasing racial and ethnic diversity in the health professions and addressing minority health issues.
