Medical Students
Ours is one of the largest anesthesiology residency training programs in the western United States, and our department oversees the perioperative management of approximately 50,000 surgeries and procedures each year.
We have over 100 faculty in all clinical subspecialties, and over 100 anesthesiology residents and subspecialty fellows who work in our state-of-the-art operating rooms, ambulatory surgery centers, ICUs, the obstetric anesthesia service, and the UCLA Comprehensive Pain Center. Areas of specialization include anesthesia for general surgery, vascular surgery, neurosurgery, cardiac and thoracic surgery, pediatric surgery, liver transplantation and other visceral organ transplant surgery, orthopedics, head and neck surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, urology, ophthalmology, and interventional radiology.
We offer a variety of excellent clinical training and research opportunities to medical students. More than 200 second and fourth-year medical students complete rotations in our department each year. Additionally, residents from the departments of internal medicine, emergency medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery, pediatrics, and other disciplines participate in our clinical rotations for an introduction to anesthesiology, airway management, pain medicine, and critical care medicine.
As part of the emergency medicine clerkship (Course Number EM000), second-year UCLA medical students are enrolled in a three-day anesthesia experience. The rotation emphasizes basic concepts in anesthesiology and critical care. We also offer three elective courses for fourth-year UCLA and visiting medical students:
- Subinternship in Anesthesiology, Course Number AN450.01
- Pain Medicine, Course Number AN298.01
- Surgery and Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine, Course Number MD455.01
Scholarships for visiting medical students are available through the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. Learn more about scholarships and and apply here >
