About

S. Anjani Mattai MD is a Clinical Professor of Medicine and Primary Care Physician with expertise in Clinical Nutrition, East-West Medicine, and Oncological Emergencies. She holds board certification in Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Mattai received her undergraduate degree in Neurobiology and Physiology from Northwestern University in 1989 and went on to earn her degree of Doctor of Medicine at Northwestern University Medical School in 1996.

After completing her residency in Internal Medicine at New York University Langone School of Medicine, Dr. Mattai served at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center/Weill Cornell Medical Center until 2010, where she managed patients with cancer-related emergencies and authored a critical care textbook chapter on oncological emergencies.

In 2011, Dr. Mattai joined the faculty in the Department of Medicine, UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and subsequently received training in Clinical Nutrition and East-West Medicine. In addition to her role as a primary care physician, she provided consultative services in Clinical Nutrition and developed an East-West Trigger Point Clinic to assist patients with chronic pain management. For her clinical care, Dr. Mattai was named Super Doctor and Top Doctor by her peers.

Dr. Mattai has always been committed to education. She has been actively involved in medical student and resident teaching and mentorship, and in 2019 she created an East-West Medicine Trigger Point Teaching Clinic for resident training. In 2023, Dr. Mattai received the Outstanding Outpatient Primary Care Teaching Award. Currently, she serves on the Internal Medicine Residency Admissions Committee.

In addition to clinical care and teaching, Dr. Mattai has collaborated in clinical research, with publications that examine the role of inflammatory markers in obesity, diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease.
