Dr. Raul Rosenthal (RJR) completed his medical school and surgical residency in Rosario, Argentina before immigrating to Frankfurt, Germany where he repeated his general surgery residency and became an attending surgeon at the Northwest Hospital, Johann Wolfgang Goethe University. In 1993, RJR moved to the United States and completed three years of a minimally invasive surgery fellowship at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, followed by a third general surgery residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.
In 1999 Dr. Rosenthal became the Chief of Minimally Invasive Surgery and Bariatric Surgery as well as Director of the Fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Florida (CCF). In 2019 RJR became the Regional Director of the Digestive Disease Institute and Chairman of the Department of General Surgery as well as Director of the General Surgery Residency Program at CCF. RJR also served as Chief of Staff and Chairman of the Medical Executive Committee during his tenure.
Dr. Rosenthal is past president of the Fellowship Council, the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS), the ASMBS Foundation, the South Florida Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and the International Society of Fluorescent Image Guided Surgery. He is the Chief Editor of SOARD, Foregut Editor of Surgery and serves as an associate editor of Obesity Surgery as well as editorial board member of Annals of Surgery and Surgical Endoscopy. He is a former Governor at the American College of Surgeons. RJR is honorary member of several international surgical societies including the European Surgical Association and the Federation of Latin-American Surgeons.
Dr. Rosenthal has performed over 10,000 general surgery and bariatric procedures and has trained over 100 fellows in advanced gastrointestinal, minimally invasive and bariatric surgery. In 2022, the American College of Surgeons named RJR a member of the Academy of Master Surgical Educators.
He has authored or co-authored over 600 peer reviewed publications, published more than 90 book chapters and over 200 educational videos. RJR is the co-editor of several books, including The ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Book, Globesity, Netter’s Gastroenterology, The Pathophysiology of Pneumoperitoneum, Fluorescent Imaging for Surgeons, Operative Strategies in Laparoscopic Surgery, Weight Loss Surgery, and Mental Conditioning for Common Operations in Surgical Training.
Dr. Rosenthal's expertise is in bariatric and gastric reoperations, obesity and cancer and gastroparesis. His latest research focuses on intraoperative nerve imaging modalities and fluorescent guided surgery. He is fluent in English, Spanish and German.
