Peter C. Butler, MD

Dr. Peter Butler is an endocrinologist in the UCLA Health San Luis Obispo clinic. He has more than 30 years of experience as an academic medical center endocrine specialist. He began his career at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, followed by Edinburgh Scotland and, for over 20 years, with UCLA in Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo.

Dr. Butler attended medical school at the University of Birmingham in England and then undertook internal medicine training in Birmingham England and Edinburgh Scotland. He continued with specialist training in Endocrinology in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

He has more than 200 publications focused on the underlying causes of type 1 and type 2 diabetes and potential new approaches to prevention and treatment. He is the former editor in chief of the American Diabetes Association Journal Diabetes and has served on many national committees for the American Diabetes Association and the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Butler is at home on the California Central Coast and when not working, he enjoys pursuing his interest in marine biology.
