- Ophthalmology
About
Dr. Michael J Gilhooley is a surgeon-scientist specializing in neuro-ophthalmology and adult strabismus. A fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, he practices clinically at both the Stein Eye Institute in Westwood and the Doheny Eye Institute, Pasadena. He leads a research group at the Stein Eye Institute has a particular interest in the inherited optic neuropathies.
Dr Gilhooley received his undergraduate and medical school training at Cambridge and undertook his PhD at Oxford. He completed his internship at the University of Glasgow before an integrated clinical-research residency at the renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital, University College London. It was in London that he completed his first fellowship in adult strabismus before moving to the University of Colorado to undertake a second fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology.
In addition to caring for patients with strabismus and neuro-ophthalmic complaints, Dr. Gilhooley is committed to advancing the field of ophthalmology. His award-winning research, focused on the inherited optic neuropathies and the unusual protein melanopsin, has led to multiple publications and presentations at national and international conferences. He was recently named the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society (NANOS) Carlow Young Investigator award winner – the most promising researcher in his subspeciality internationally.
In addition to his clinical, surgical and research activities, Dr. Gilhooley is committed to educating the next generation of medical students and residents and has a formal teaching qualification. He sits on the scientific committee of NANOS and is a section editor for the journal of neuro-ophthalmology and is associate editor (neuro-ophthalmology) of the European Journal of Ophthalmology.

Interests
Dr. Gilhooley’s research centers on the intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells of the optic nerve (ipRGCs) and the fascinating protein that renders them sensitive to light (melanopsin). His group is particularly interested in defining the mechanisms by which ipRGCs survive in inherited optic neuropathies while most other optic nerve cells die, leading to loss of vision. Uncovering why these rare cells are so resilient to disease is essential to develop novel treatments to protect sight in patients with optic nerve disease.
