Lily Van Tongeren, MD

Dr. Lily Van Tongeren, known as “Dr. Lily” (she/her), is a board-certified family physician and graduate of the UCLA Health LGBTQ+ Healthcare Fellowship. She provides comprehensive, affirming primary care with particular expertise in LGBTQIA+ health, pediatric and adolescent gender-affirming care, sexual health, and family planning. Guided by a commitment to bodily autonomy, Dr. Lily believes patients deserve clear information, compassionate support, and meaningful choice in their healthcare. Her approach is collaborative, nonjudgmental, and rooted in shared decision-making, helping patients make care decisions that align with their own values, needs, and goals.

Dr. Lily particularly enjoys caring for adolescents, young adults, and LGBTQIA+ patients seeking an affirming primary care home. She strives to create a welcoming environment where patients can ask questions openly, build confidence in navigating their health, and take an active role in decisions about their care. She values building enduring, trusting partnerships with patients over time.

Her clinical interests include gender-affirming care, sexual and reproductive health, contraception and menstrual management, STI/HIV prevention and treatment, and HPV-related cancer prevention and screening. Dr. Lily performs in-office procedures, including IUD and nexplanon insertions, with an emphasis on proactive pain management, informed consent, shared decision-making, and a trauma-informed lens. She is specialty trained in high-resolution anoscopy for anal cancer (and pre-cancer) screening and treatment. 

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Dr. Lily earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, graduating with Distinction in General Scholarship. She completed the Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Program at Johns Hopkins University and previously worked as a Clinical Research Associate in Clinical Cancer Genomics at City of Hope in Duarte, California.

Dr. Lily received her medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine and completed her family medicine residency at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University/Cooper University Hospital, where she served as Chief Resident and Clinical Instructor of Family Medicine. She was honored with the 2025 Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Resident Teacher Award for her dedication to advancing LGBTQIA+ cultural competency among medical students, residents, and clinic staff.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Lily enjoys going to the movies, the camaraderie of watching live sports, tattoos as an art form, and spending time with her quirky senior rescue dog.
