Kiran Kavipurapu, MPH, DO, JD

Dr. Kavipurapu is the Residency Program Director of UCLA Obstetrics and Gynecology and an Assistant Clinical Professor.  Dr. Kavi earned dual doctorate degrees in medicine and law, from Western University of Health Sciences and ULV College of Law, respectively. In addition, he also holds a Masters in Public Health with a focus on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Studies from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC), where he also did his undergraduate degree in preventative medicine. He went on to complete his Obstetrics & Gynecology residency at UCLA-Kern Medical Center.  

Dr. Kavi is a board-certified Obstetrician-Gynecologist with clinical and research interests spanning general obstetrics and gynecology, high-risk pregnancy, and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery.

Dr. Kavi cares for both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies and is dedicated to helping patients and their families feel safe, supported, and well-informed every step of the way. He is skilled in vaginal deliveries using tools like forceps or vacuum when needed to avoid a cesarean birth, and has special expertise in managing twin pregnancies, including safely delivering the second twin in a breech position. He also performs cervical cerclage, using the Shirodkar technique for women with a shortened cervix to help prevent preterm birth.  He is also well versed in performing routine and complex Cesarean deliveries.

As a full scope Gynecologist, Dr. Kavi also has expertise in both medical and surgical management of benign conditions such as abnormal uterine bleeding, uterine fibroids or polyps, ovarian or adnexal masses, abnormal pap smears, contraception, etc.  Dr. Kavi's practice is focused on minimally invasive surgical approaches, including robotic, laparoscopic, and vaginal techniques. He particularly specializes in vaginal hysterectomy—the least invasive method of hysterectomy—and is also proficient in advanced surgical technologies such as Vaginal Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (vNOTES).  He provides a broad range of benign gynecologic procedures—including fibroid removal, ovarian cystectomy, tubal sterilization, hysteroscopy, and hysterectomy—offering minimally invasive robotic or laparoscopic options when appropriate.  Dr. Kavi is committed to placing each patient’s goals and values at the center of care, using a shared decision-making to ensure that surgical plans align with individual needs and preferences.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Kavi holds several leadership roles at the state and national level. He serves as the Vice Chair for the Los Angeles region of District IX of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), is on the ACOG District IX Advisory Council, and contributes to the advancement of the field as a Board Examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). Through these roles, he brings a strong commitment to advocacy, mentorship, and the protection of high-quality healthcare in the United States.

In addition to his role as a physician, Dr. Kavi is a licensed attorney in the state of California with deep interests in social justice, reproductive rights, and the medical-legal aspects of healthcare reform. His commitment to quality improvement and advocacy is reflected in his patient-centered approach to care. As the Residency Program Director, Dr. Kavi is passionate about mentoring and training the next generation of Ob/Gyn physicians. Outside of medicine, he enjoys horseback riding and participating in music and theater—drawing from his background as a former Bollywood-style dancer and choreographer.
