Dr. Henry Zelada is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and the Medical Director of the Inpatient Glycemic Service at UCLA Health. He is a board-certified endocrinologist with expertise in the management of complex diabetes, including type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, and atypical forms such as post-transplant diabetes, cystic fibrosis related diabetes, monogenic diabetes, and diabetes due to secondary causes.

His clinical expertise includes diabetes technology and insulin pump management in complex inpatient and outpatient settings, cardiovascular risk assessment and reduction, and the prevention and management of diabetes-related complications, including diabetic kidney disease. He is a strong advocate for precision medicine and emphasizes accurate classification of diabetes subtypes to provide individualized and high-quality care.

Dr. Zelada earned his medical degree from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, widely regarded as the leading medical school in Peru. He completed his internal medicine residency at a University of Illinois at Chicago affiliated hospital and subsequently completed a fellowship in endocrinology at Washington University in St. Louis under the mentorship of Dr. Janet McGill, with a focus on advanced diabetes care and emerging technologies. Prior to joining UCLA, he served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he trained endocrinology fellows and advanced practice providers and contributed to the inpatient hyperglycemia curriculum.

Dr. Zelada has received research funding from the American Diabetes Association and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. His work focuses on improving care for patients with atypical forms of diabetes and using innovative tools, including artificial intelligence and health system-based approaches, to enhance inpatient and outpatient glucose management. He has also created practical inpatient diabetes management guides and educational resources for endocrinology fellows, advanced practice providers, and residents to support high-quality diabetes care across different clinical settings.
