About
Dr. Dwayne Carney, M.D., MPH, is an Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Surgeon specializing in ligament, cartilage, and reconstructive surgery of the foot and ankle. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Washington University in St. Louis/Barnes-Jewish Hospital, which is considered one of the nation’s premier training programs. Dr. Carney then pursued a Foot & Ankle Fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City, which has been ranked as the #1 Orthopaedic hospital in the U.S. for 16 consecutive years.
He earned his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine, where he finished in the top 20% of his class. He earned both a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry and Psychology and a master’s in public health in Epidemiology from the University of Miami. While in medical school, driven by his interest in research and advancement of the field of medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery, he completed a research fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, where he conducted basic science and clinical research. His research covers a broad range of topics in basic science and clinical research, including fifth metatarsal fractures, biologics usage in foot and ankle surgery, sports-medicine foot and ankle, foot and ankle trauma, as well as projects focusing on progressive collapsing foot deformity, minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery, and total ankle arthroplasty.
Dr. Carney is a member of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS), where he has served as a committee member of the Committee on Health Outcomes, Registries and Databases (CHORD) and as a reviewer for the Foot & Ankle International (FAI) journal. He is also a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), and the J. Robert Gladden Society Orthopaedic Society (JRGOS), where he serves as a committee member for the Resident Success and Support committee. He is passionate about surgical education and mentorship and has played an active role in guiding the next generation of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
He is especially interested in Sports Medicine of the foot & ankle and has helped with team coverage for the Westchester Knicks (G-League) and worked alongside team doctors for the New York Nets (NBA) and New York Knicks (NBA). He has provided surgical care to professional athletes from several sports and has an ongoing interest in providing care for all at the highest level.
