About
Dr. Courtney DeCan is an Associate Professor within the Division of Clinical Nutrition.
Dr. DeCan's primary areas of practice are the treatment and prevention of obesity and diet related chronic disease. Her practice focuses on using nutrition therapy for the prevention and treatment of obesity and metabolic conditions including diabetes, high cholesterol, and cardiovascular disease along with other gastrointestinal conditions and cancer. She prioritizes personalized nutrition and goal setting with patients along with problem solving healthy eating in our food environment today.
Dr. DeCan is a native of Butte, Montana. She received her medical degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine and completed her residency training in a combined internal medicine & preventive medicine program at UCLA Medical Center. She also served as Chief Fellow in preventive medicine while getting her MPH degree at UCLA. During her training, she engaged initially in public health work in Peru and the Dominican Republic and later worked clinically with the Infectious Diseases service in Iquitos, Peru.
Dr. DeCan also serves as Global Health Faculty for the Internal Medicine Residency Pathway Program, coordinating medical education, research, and mentorship opportunities in Iquitos, Peru in collaboration with colleagues in the Hospital Regional de Loreto.
Dr. DeCan’s research focuses on improving nutrition access and education in underserved populations, medical education, global health, and the relationship between chronic and infectious diseases and nutritional status.
Outside of work she enjoys traveling, trail running, salsa dancing, and live music.
