Brian A. DiCarlo, MD
- Hematology Oncology
About
Dr. Brian DiCarlo is a hematologist and medical oncologist who practices in San Luis Obispo with UCLA Health. He treats patients with all types of cancer, including hematologic malignancies, and is board certified in hematology and medical oncology. He provides compassionate, empathetic cancer care to the whole patient, and involves their family and caregivers in clinical discussions.
Throughout each patients' cancer treatment, Dr. DiCarlo works with a multidisciplinary team that includes their primary care physician, other specialists, and local resources for supportive care and complementary medicine. He routinely uses molecular/genomic sequencing of tumor tissue to help identify treatments that may work best for each individual patient. He has a passion for bringing clinical trials and research to the community setting, and for helping eligible patients participate in clinical trials from their home town without having to travel to UCLA's Los Angeles campus. The San Luis Obispo location participates in a vast portfolio of clinical trials for breast cancer, lung cancer, gastrointestinal cancers, multiple myeloma and other cancer types.
Dr. DiCarlo received his medical degree from the State University of New York at Brooklyn Downstate Medical Center College of Medicine. He then completed his internal medicine residency in a joint program between New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and completed a clinical fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Dr. DiCarlo has served the Central Coast cancer community for 12 years a hematologist and medical oncologist. Before joining UCLA Health in March 2019, he was the Director of Clinical Research in Santa Maria and San Luis Obispo. He is excited to bring the world-class reputation and research capabilities of UCLA to our cancer patients on the Central Coast.
Dr. DiCarlo is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, the American Medical Association, California Medical Association and AOA Honor medical society. When he's not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife and teenage son, coaching sports, reading, and playing basketball and guitar with his son.
