About

Dr. Boris Malyugin is an internationally renowned ophthalmologist, known for his expertise in cataract and corneal surgery. 

He was trained in Moscow at the Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery, the leading eye care center in Russia. Over the years, he held several leadership positions in that center. In 2024, Dr. Malyugin joined the faculty of the UCLA Department of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Malyugin has made significant contributions to the field of ophthalmology, especially in the development of innovative surgical techniques and devices. One of his most notable contributions is the invention of the “Malyugin Ring”, a device used during cataract surgery to stabilize the iris in patients with small pupils, which has been widely adopted by eye surgeons globally. He is also highly regarded for his work in cornea transplantation (lamellar and full thickness), surgical ocular surface reconstruction, complex cataract surgery, laser-assisted cataract and corneal procedures, premium IOLs, and phacoemulsification techniques in diseased eyes.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Malyugin is a prolific researcher and educator, having published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and frequently presenting at international meetings. He is an active member of several prestigious ophthalmology societies and serves on the editorial boards of leading ophthalmic journals. He is a member of the International Intraocular Implant Club, Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis, and the International Council of Ophthalmology Board of Trustees. 

He has received the highest honors from the leading professional organizations: American Academy of Ophthalmology (Achievement Award and International Ophthalmologist Education Award); Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society (Honorary Member Award), American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (Binkhorst Medal), United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (Pearce Medal), European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (Binkhorst Award), International Society of Refractive Surgeons (Kritzinger Medal), Hellenic Society of Intraocular Implant Surgeons (Kelman Award), Italian Ophthalmology Society (Scarpa Medal), Brazilian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (Kelman Medal), Intraocular Implant & Refractive Society of India (J.W. Agarwal Global Icon Award), and many others. 

Dr. Malyugin was mentioned in “The Ophthalmologist” Power List among the Top 100 eye doctors in the world (2018, 2020, 2025). His contributions have earned him recognition as one of the prominent figures in modern ophthalmology.
