Follow-Up Care After an Emergency Department Visit, Hospital Admission, or Outpatient Referral 

If you visit the Emergency Department (ED) at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center or UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center — or if you’ve been admitted to one of the hospitals — you may be eligible for a faster, more comfortable alternative to traditional hospitalization: the Next Day Clinic. This program allows you to return home sooner, whether you’re being discharged directly from the ED or leaving the hospital earlier than expected. You’ll continue receiving hospital-level care with our expert outpatient treatment team at the Next Day Clinic, while enjoying the comfort of your own home and the support of loved ones.

Patients may also be referred directly to the Next Day Clinic by their UCLA Health outpatient provider when urgent treatment, monitoring, or diagnostic services are needed. This pathway can help patients receive timely care and avoid an unnecessary visit to the Emergency Department. 

What is the Next Day Clinic?

The Next Day Clinic is a comprehensive follow-up care program for patients who need ongoing hospital-level treatment after a visit to the ED or hospital. The clinic also serves patients referred directly by outpatient providers who require expedited evaluation, treatment, or monitoring that would otherwise often be managed in the Emergency Department. Patients receive personalized, next-day care at our clinic with pre-arranged tests, treatments, and ongoing monitoring for as many days as needed. This may include:

Treatments delivered on-site

• Breathing treatments and supplemental oxygen
• IV fluids and medications, including antibiotics
• IV diuresis for heart failure decompensation
• Organizing blood and blood-product transfusion
• Specialty and antiviral infusions (e.g., remdesivir)
• Coordination of home IV antibiotics

Diagnostics and imaging

• STAT lab tests and diagnostic evaluations
• X-ray and echocardiography
• ECG  and cardiac rhythm monitoring
• Remote cardiac monitoring for select patients
• Coordination of CT, ultrasound, and interventional radiology

Care coordination and logistics

• Nurse-led coordination of follow-up care and specialist referrals
• Transportation to and from the clinic as needed
• Overnight accommodations available based on need

The goal is to provide seamless continuity of care so you can recover safely at home while getting the medical attention you need.

How the Next Day Clinic Works

Accessing the Next Day Clinic involves these steps:

1. Emergency Department evaluation: After your visit to the Emergency Department at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center or UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center, a UCLA Health provider will assess whether you qualify for the Next Day Clinic.
2. In-hospital evaluation: If you are already hospitalized at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center or UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center, your inpatient treatment team will evaluate if you can be discharged early and return to the Next Day Clinic.
3. Emergency Department avoidance: Patients referred by their outpatient providers can often receive pre-scheduled hospital-level services without an ED visit, reducing wait times and improving convenience.
4. Opt-in decision: If eligible, you can opt to participate in the Next Day Clinic program.
5. Next Day Clinic visit: Your appointment will be scheduled before you leave the hospital or by your referring provider. You will receive clear instructions on when to come for your care.
6. Continued monitoring and care: The Next Day Clinic team will provide necessary treatments, monitor your recovery, and coordinate further follow-up as needed.
7. Case Management: You will be assigned a dedicated nurse case manager to coordinate your care throughout your treatment.

The Next Day Clinic is available to patients who visit the ED at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center or UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center, as well as eligible patients who are admitted to one of these hospitals. The clinics are located at:
