Our areas of care

When you come to UCLA Health for ILD care, you have an experienced team dedicated to your well-being. We offer:

Thorough evaluations

The first step in effective treatment is a precise diagnosis. We use sophisticated imaging studies and lung function tests to evaluate your lung function. Our specialists review your health history and test results to determine the stage and type of lung disease. We also evaluate your current medications, overall health and goals.

Customized treatments

The many types of ILD require multiple approaches to treatment. We work closely with you to create an individualized plan. Whether you need medications, respiratory therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation or a lung transplant, you can expect world-class care tailored to your needs.

Education and support

We offer the full spectrum of support for people with ILD as well as loved ones and family members. Connecting with others who share your experience can improve your mental health. You also receive advice, practical information and access to helpful resources. Time and again, we’ve seen the positive impact these groups can have on emotional well-being.

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) conditions we treat

There are more than 200 types of interstitial lung disease. Most of these disorders are chronic (long-lasting). The diseases cause inflammation, which can lead to scarring on the lungs over time. The scarring, which is called pulmonary fibrosis (lung fibrosis), can make it difficult to breathe and get enough oxygen throughout your body.

ILD can result from many diseases and conditions, including autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Exposure to toxins and chemicals can also cause ILD. Most often, the cause is unknown. Symptoms of interstitial lung disease include:

  • Chest discomfort
  • Dry, hacking cough that does not produce mucus (phlegm)
  • Extreme tiredness (fatigue) and weakness
  • Labored breathing, which may be fast and shallow
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • Shortness of breath, especially with activity

Interstitial lung disease treatments we offer

Our ILD team works with you and other specialists to tailor a treatment plan to fit your needs. Depending on the type and severity of disease, we may take several approaches to help you manage symptoms and stay active. Treatments cannot repair scarring that has already occurred, but they can prevent further lung damage. We specialize in:

ILD medications

Medications are an important part of a comprehensive care plan for ILD. Several medications can reduce inflammation, protect the lungs or suppress the immune system. We recommend the right medications for you and adjust them if your needs change.

Pulmonary rehabilitation

Experienced respiratory therapists deliver comprehensive rehab services that focus on all aspects of your health. We create an individualized plan to increase lung function and make your breathing more efficient.

We also offer tailored physical fitness plans to improve your endurance and help you get more physical activity. Registered dietitians offer nutritional guidance and practical tips to maximize your health and improve your quality of life. We design each plan around your lifestyle.

Lung transplantation

Some people with ILD need a lung transplant. If your physician recommends this option, our lung transplant program is one of the best in the nation. UCLA Health lung transplant surgeons are at the forefront of new techniques that make these procedures more effective and safer than ever before.
