About

Dr. Chris Moriates is the Chief of Hospital Medicine at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System and a Professor of Clinical Medicine at UCLA. He is also the Executive Director for the non-profit Costs of Care, which aims to cultivate change agents who will lead the creation of a more affordable and equitable health system.

Dr. Moriates co-authored the book Understanding Value-Based Healthcare (McGraw-Hill, 2015), which Dr. Atul Gawande called “a masterful primer for all clinicians.” He leads the STARS program for medical students across the United States (stars.costsofcare.org) and co-chairs the Choosing Wisely International Consortium medical education committee. He was a founding editor for the “Teachable Moments” series in JAMA Internal Medicine. He has published more than 75 peer-reviewed articles. He speaks internationally on topics related to educating clinicians about healthcare value and how to implement high-value care.

Prior to joining UCLA / VA, Dr. Moriates served as the Assistant Dean for Healthcare Value, Associate Chair for Quality & Safety, and Associate Professor with Tenure in Internal Medicine & Medical Education at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. Prior to Dell Medical School, Dr. Moriates was an Assistant Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine at UCSF, where he led the UCSF Center for Healthcare Value’s Caring Wisely™ program, the Division of Hospital Medicine High-Value Care Committee, and the internal medicine residency’s Cost Awareness curriculum.
