Dr. Joanna Schaenman's research is focused on immune control of infection with a focus on cytomegalovirus (CMV) and other viral infections that cause significant morbidity and mortality after transplantation. Another important area of study for her is the growing pool of elderly patients, where immunosuppression is associated with immunologic exhaustion and senescence, potentially important causes of increased infectious complications. In addition to direct cytopathic effects, viral infections may affect clinical outcomes by influencing immune reconstitution, graft-versus-host disease and development of rejection after solid organ transplantation.
